UPS and FedEx Ground MD-11 Fleets After Deadly Louisville Plane Crash as FAA Orders Inspections

Louisville, Kentucky (July 09, 2026) – Two of the nation’s largest parcel carriers have grounded their fleets of McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft following Tuesday’s deadly UPS plane crash in Louisville, Kentucky, involving the same aircraft type.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also directed operators to inspect all MD-11 aircraft after the crash, which resulted in at least 14 fatalities.

UPS announced that it temporarily grounded its MD-11 fleet “out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of safety.” The company said MD-11 aircraft account for approximately 9% of its air fleet.

“We made this decision proactively at the recommendation of the aircraft manufacturer. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our employees and the communities we serve,” UPS spokesman said.

The grounding decision was reported after NBC News cited sources familiar with the matter. A photo reviewed by NBC News showed a cockpit message instructing pilots to return, stating: “Per UPS MD11 are not to depart effective immediately.”

FedEx, a major UPS competitor, also announced that it had grounded its MD-11 aircraft. The company operates 28 MD-11 planes as part of a fleet of approximately 700 aircraft.

Authorities and aviation officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash and the safety of the MD-11 aircraft model.
