Chain-Reaction Crash Involving Train Injures One on Six Mile Lane in Louisville

Louisville, Kentucky (July 30, 2026) – One person was injured following a chain-reaction crash involving a train and two vehicles on Six Mile Lane in east Louisville on Friday morning.

According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, emergency crews responded just before 8:00 a.m. to the 7700 block of Six Mile Lane near Westwood Farms Drive after receiving reports of a crash involving a train.

Preliminary information indicates that a Norfolk Railroad train had stopped on the tracks for an unknown reason, causing traffic to back up in the area. Police said a van driven by an adult struck a vehicle that had stopped because of the train, pushing the vehicle into the side of one of the train cars.

One person was injured in the collision and was transported to UofL Hospital for treatment. Authorities said the victim was alert and conscious, and the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The driver of the van was not injured. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

Those injured in the crash are in our thoughts, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.

What to Know About Chain-Reaction Crashes at Railroad Crossings

Chain-reaction crashes near railroad crossings can occur when traffic unexpectedly comes to a stop because of a passing or stationary train. Drivers who fail to maintain a safe following distance or react in time may trigger secondary collisions that can involve multiple vehicles and even trains.

1. Maintain a Safe Following Distance

Leaving adequate space between vehicles provides more time to stop safely if traffic suddenly backs up near railroad crossings.

2. Stay Alert Near Railroad Crossings

Motorists should anticipate changing traffic conditions around railroad crossings, especially when trains are present or warning signals are activated.

3. Avoid Following Too Closely

Tailgating significantly increases the risk of rear-end and chain-reaction crashes when vehicles stop unexpectedly.

4. Contact Emergency Services

Anyone involved in or witnessing a crash involving a train should call 911 immediately so emergency responders can provide medical assistance and secure the area.

5. Exercise Extra Caution Around Trains

Drivers should never attempt to drive around crossing gates or stop too close to railroad tracks, as trains require long distances to come to a complete stop.
