4 Common Holiday Accidents

The holiday season is filled with fun traditions, such as large dinner parties, holiday decorations, and road trips. Unfortunately, these holiday traditions come with serious hazards. To help you and your family stay safe this holiday season, our San Francisco personal injury attorneys explain the most common accidents that occur during the holidays and how to avoid them.

#1: Fall Accidents

Slip and fall accidents are common during the holiday season. Most fall accidents occur when people are putting up holiday decorations on their homes. According to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 5,800 individuals are injured in fall-related injuries attributed to holiday decorating or related activities every year. Most fall accidents occurred from ladders. If you plan on decorating this season, make sure that ladders are leveled, and extension cords are not in the way.

#2: Drunk Driving Accidents

‘Tis the season for holiday parties and celebrating with loved ones – which often includes alcohol. Unfortunately, this season also comes with many drunk driving accidents. If you plan on drinking this season, be sure to have a designated driver to keep you and your loved ones safe. If you don’t plan on driving, you should still be extra cautious while driving to avoid other drunk drivers.

#3: Christmas Tree Fires

Christmas tree fires are also extremely common during the holidays. Christmas tree fires often occur due to faulty Christmas lights or dry trees. To avoid a house fire, be sure to add water to your tree. You should also inspect your Christmas tree lights and make sure they are up to code.

#4: Electric Shocks

Holiday decorations often include a multitude of wires and extension cords, making electrical shocks one of the most common accidents during the holidays. Keep an eye out for frayed or damaged wires and tears on your extension cords. It’s also a good tip to not overload sockets and to unplug holiday lights when you leave your home.
